The card is completely free, however, please return your borrowed library materials on-time, as there may be late fines if you do not. There’s even a three month temporary card for those interested in borrowing who are traveling to NYC. In fact, eligibility is open to anyone living, working, attending school, or paying property taxes in NYS. NYC residents can simply apply in person, bringing along one photo ID New York State residents living outside of NYC can even apply by mail. Getting kids to appreciate books while they’re young is essential this underutilized resource should be better known by every Staten Islander, both young and old.Īnd, of course, a NYPL card is a resource that any resident in NYC or NYS can apply for. And kids’ scholastic performance, and overall learning capacity, can only be enriched by a trip with parents or caregivers to the local library. The more we learn, the better equipped we will all be to deal with life’s challenges. If I use the kiosk in my branch I have to remember to first scan my library card and then the NYPL barcode on the book(s).Įasier but still have to remember the sequence as there are no instructions at the kiosk (at least at my local branch)Īgain, is this really worth it? Maybe if there are long lines, which I don’t see at my branch. This seems like a good deal of bother to just take out a book. And of course remember to turn it in again later so I don’t use up my data plan. Otherwise the mobile checkout will get stuck as it can’t connect (it just said “loading” rather than something useful).Īlternatively I can shut off wifi on my phone.
